The Client

James Hall & Co. Ltd. is a Lancashire-based family business which was founded in Southport in 1863. Currently one of the county’s largest employers with more than 800 staff, they are now a wholesaler and distributor for SPAR, serving over 540 stores in the North of England.

Re-investment has always been a priority to James Hall & Co. and as a result the business has grown very successfully. In February 2011, they moved to a purpose-built distribution centre on the outskirts of Preston, overlooking Junction 31a of the M6. The unique design of their new depot ensures a truly multi-functional site capable of handling and distributing all types of goods and the manufacturing of fresh food.


Media Village were approached to create and develop a brand that would provide a localised and heritage feel within their stores. As the stores division was known as G & E Murgatroyd, it was decided to formulate the brand that would look like it had a depth of history and traditional Lancashire values and heritage. This was achieved through the use of black and white photography, a signature logo and hand-drawn chalk board style illustrations and was migrated across the full range of marketing channels from in store signage and point of sale items to marketing literature and advertising. A fully collaborative approach was undertaken to create this brand with client interaction encouraged at every stage.



Working with G & E Murgatroyd, we have created a range of marketing campaigns to help promote the brand and heritage of the business. Already being a well-established business meant that our campaigns had to maintain the good name and history of the business whilst being eye-catching and striking. It was important that the campaigns maintained a consistent feel throughout all marketing, digital, printed and video channels.
