Variety Funerals
Introduction
Launching into a trust-driven and emotionally sensitive market, Variety Funerals required a website that could communicate credibility instantly. With no legacy platform in place, the opportunity was to design and build a scalable system from the ground up – one that supported families thoughtfully while also preparing the business for location-based growth across the UK
Challenge
The primary challenge was balancing emotional sensitivity with technical complexity. Visitors to a funeral website are often navigating urgent and difficult circumstances, so clarity, tone and ease of use were critical. The structure had to reduce friction, guide decision-making gently, and work flawlessly on mobile devices.
Behind the scenes, the build required significant scale. A crematorium finder database needed to allow users to search for local venues, view them on a map and see distance-based results. This required the creation of a custom post type architecture supporting over 17,000 location entries, with careful attention paid to performance and maintainability.
In addition, the site needed to be technically prepared for large-scale Google PPC activity. While campaign management sat externally, the website had to support dynamic geo-targeted landing experiences. Location IDs passed via URL parameters would automatically update page titles and location references, ensuring users arrived on highly relevant pages without the need to create thousands of static versions.
All of this needed to remain fast, stable and easy to manage.
Solution
The platform was designed around user intent and emotional context. Clear content hierarchy, considered spacing and supportive language were used to help families quickly understand their options without feeling overwhelmed. The visual tone reinforced reassurance and professionalism, strengthening trust from the first interaction.
Technically, the build was engineered for scale. A robust custom post type structure was implemented to manage over 17,000 locations efficiently, maintaining performance despite the volume of data. The crematorium finder tool was developed with geolocation logic and integrated mapping, enabling users to search by area and view accurate distance-based results in a simple interface.
To support future paid advertising, dynamic geo-location functionality was built into the site. When users arrive via location-specific URLs, page titles and contextual content automatically adapt to match the searched area. This approach preserves relevance at scale without compromising site speed or structure.
The final result is a website that combines empathy with technical precision — delivering a calm, accessible experience for families while providing the infrastructure required for national growth.
